Citizenship Ceremonies

Cumberland City Council hosts a number of citizenship ceremonies throughout the year for residents who have applied to become Australian citizens through The Department of Home Affairs' Australian Citizenship Program, which is supported by local councils across Australia.

Becoming an Australian citizen is an important decision.

The Department of Home Affairs are responsible for the delivery of the Australian Citizenship Program.

This program is supported by Local Councils throughout Australia. Cumberland City Council hosts a number of citizenship ceremonies throughout the year for residents who have applied to become Australian citizens through the Department of Home Affairs.

If you have applied for citizenship, you will be notified of your ceremony details once you have been approved by the Department of Home Affairs and allocated to a ceremony. The Department of Home Affairs will send a letter of invitation advising you of your ceremony details.

Where can I obtain an Application Form for Citizenship?

Application forms for Australian Citizenship can be obtained by calling: - Department of Home Affairs on 131 880, or the Citizenship Website http://www.citizenship.gov.au

How do I know when my ceremony is?

Once the Department of Home Affairs has sent you a letter approving your application for Australian Citizenship, within 6 months they will send an additional letter of invitation advising where and when your Ceremony will take place. If you do not receive a scheduled date within 6 months of your approval, please contact the Department of Home Affairs.

What if I cannot attend the ceremony?

You will need to advise the Department of Home Affairs on 131 880 to request an alternative date and time. If you consistently fail to attend you will need to discuss your circumstances and options with the Department of Home Affairs.

How do I get my Australian Citizenship?

Cumberland City Council is only responsible for conducting Australian Citizenship Ceremonies. We have no input with applications, approvals or certifications. All enquiries about applications and approvals need to be directed to the Department of Home Affairs on 131 880 or http://www.citizenship.gov.au

How long will the ceremony go for?

The Australian Citizenship Ceremony will take approximately 45 minutes. All Conferees must arrive one hour prior to the commencement for registration purposes. If a Conferee arrives after the commencement of the Ceremony they will not be allowed to participate. Their Certificate will be returned to the Department of Home Affairs and another Ceremony date will be allocated.

What do I need to bring?

Photo Proof of Identity (Licence or Passport) and your letter of invitation from the Department of Home Affairs.

Can I bring guests?

No guests will be permitted to attend the ceremony due to restricted seating.

Can I have my photograph taken at the ceremony?

At the completion of the ceremony, the Mayor and dignitaries will be available for photographs with conferees and families. Please bring your camera or mobile phone as a staff member present at the ceremony will be able to assist with taking your photo.

Can I leave after I receive my certificate?

The Affirmation of Australian Citizenship and the singing of the National Anthem are part of the official ceremony and leaving prior to this may invalidate your citizenship.

My family members have been allocated a separate ceremony date, can I change this?

You will need to contact Department of Home Affairs on 131 880.

Will I be automatically be added to the Electoral Roll?

No. There will be enrolment forms for you to complete after your Australian Citizenship Ceremony, Electoral staff will be able to assist.
