Community News Update

18 October 2022

Message from Mayor Lake

Emergency Services Family Day

It was great to meet the emergency service personnel at the Emergency Services Family Day. There was some really interesting equipment on display, including an old stretcher and retro ambulance vehicles dating back to the 70’s. There were also demonstrations from the SES and Fire Crews plus meet and greet with members from the police highway patrol, mounted police and dog squad. The highlight of the event was the police rescue chopper which made a landing on the oval next to Eric Tweedale Stadium. The event was a success and it was great to see the community so engaged and involved.

Granville Swim Centre Amenities Opening

Summer is fast approaching which means Council’s Swim Centres are opening for the season ahead. We’ve recently finished upgrades on the amenities block at the Granville Swimming Centre. This was made possible after Council was successful in receiving a grant of $500,000 under the Australian Government’s Community Development Grants Program. The new facility has upgraded change rooms with an increased number of male and female changerooms (including larger space options for parents with small children), adult change rooms, improved accessibility and ventilation. For more information about our swim centres visit www.cumberland.nsw.gov.au/swimming-pools

Merrylands Civic Square Update

The $11 million Merrylands Civic Square project is on track with the technical design drawings finalised, preliminary works nearing completion and preparations underway to progress scheduled works for the project. The new community space will provide a unique gathering place for cultural gatherings and events, as well as social activities given its ideal location in the heart of Merrylands and proximity to local retail outlets and businesses. 2022 Cumberland Local Business Awards

It was a great evening at the 2022 Cumberland Local Business Awards recently with hundreds of local businesses coming together to celebrate their achievements. Congratulations to the 30 winners who took out awards in specialist categories. A special mention goes to winners of the major categories with Catherine O’Keefe from Catherine’s Cutting It taking out Business Person of the Year Award, Jacob Bayada from Marky Sparky who won the Youth Award and Five Star Builders who won Business of the Year Award. I’d also like to extend a congratulations to the 249 businesses that made it as finalists in this year’s awards. Cumberland has a growing business community so it’s really important that we support and recognise the businesses that make up the backbone of our local economy
