Message from Mayor Lake
This week on March 8, we celebrate International Women’s Day and the theme for this year is “Break the Bias”. Let’s enjoy the day together by renewing our commitment to women’s equality and a world that is diverse, equitable and inclusive.
At Cumberland Council I’m proud to be part of a team of Councillors that includes a record number of women from diverse backgrounds. I am hopeful that our work will encourage other women and girls to stand for leadership roles in our community. Together, we can all play a part in helping to build a world where difference is valued for the strength it brings.
Our thoughts are with all those being affected by the unprecedented flooding across NSW and Queensland and acknowledge the outstanding efforts of the SES teams and other emergency personnel and volunteers who are working overtime to assist those in need.
We have been here before and being a generous community, we have always risen to help neighbours and strangers in need. If you are wanting to donate support, the NSW Government is urging everyone to take advantage of the established arrangements they have with national non-for-profit GIVIT by visiting https://www.givit.org.au/storms-and-flooding. People can also make financial donations to the Red Cross flood appeal by visiting https://www.redcross.org.au/floodsappeal
Our hearts also go out to those families in Ukraine that are suffering and are at the brunt of the growing crisis. It’s absolutely harrowing to watch innocent civilians’ lives being overturned. There is a number of charity organisations that you can donate to that are taking action to support Ukraine and provide humanitarian assistance to those impacted by the crisis including Caritas Australia www.caritas.org.au/donate/emergencyappeals/ukraine/, UNICEF Australia www.unicef.org.au/appeals/ukraine-emergency-appeal and Save the Children Australia www.savethechildren.org.au/
