Cumberland Council have responded to the community’s calls for a neighbourhood skate park in the Greystanes Ward, endorsing a proposal to set aside $572,000 from the 2017/18 budget to build the facility.

“Council has listened to the community’s calls for a skate park and quickly commissioned a study to identify needs and opportunities in the Greystone’s area,” Cumberland Council Administrator Viv May said.

“I’m happy to announce that we will be bringing a modern skate park to Cumberland.”

The comprehensive study, including further community engagement, confirmed the demand for skating opportunities in Cumberland.

The report found that neighbourhood skate parks, such as that proposed for Greystanes, have a service area of around three kilometeres travel distance, serve a population of around 25,000 and need to be a minimum of 1,000m2 in size.

Three sites have been found to meet this and other criteria:

– Bathurst Street Park
– Greystanes Sports Park
– Dirrabari Reserve

“Council has identified three sites for the park, all within three kilometres of the centre of Greystanes, with the size and scope required to service the population,” Mr May said.

“Now Council will do a second round of consultation with local young people and the wider community about the location and design of the facility.

“Once that process is complete Council will engage a specialist design and construct consultant to develop and finalise the design of the skate park and begin construction.”

Construction is tentatively scheduled to begin by the end of 2017, subject to development application approval.

Council will also apply for a $50,000 Community Building Partnerships Grant to assist with the skate park development, with the application having the support of the local Member for Prospect Dr Hugh McDermott MP.
