Cumberland Council has used National Reconciliation Week 2017 and the upcoming Eid festival to launch its new street flag banner program. The program is intended to mark key community, civic and cultural events, and support various awareness raising campaigns.

Banners are currently flying in the town centres of Auburn, Granville, Merrylands, Guildford, Greystanes, Wentworthville, Toongabbie, Pendle Hill and other prominent locations throughout Cumberland.

The program intends to commemorate civic events like ANZAC Day and Australia Day, religious and cultural festivals such as Lunar New Year, Eid, Diwali and Christmas and promote awareness raising campaigns such as Don’t DIS my ABILITY.

Cumberland Council Interim General Manager Malcolm Ryan said the street flag banner program was about cultivating a sense of belonging in the area.

“As a Council we are determined for Cumberland to be place where everyone feels welcome and can belong,” Mr Ryan said.

“We want to publically recognise and celebrate those occasions that are close to the heart of the Cumberland community and that resonate with all Australians.

“This is why we commissioned banners marking National Reconciliation Week and wishing residents a happy Eid; as we will for the other major community, civic, cultural and awareness raising events.

“We will also use the banners to alert residents to particular awareness raising campaigns and events for specific groups within the Cumberland community, such as Youth Week, Senior’s Week and more.

“Major events and festivals bring to life the personality of our neighbourhoods while strengthening connections between residents.

“Our diversity is one of our greatest assets. Nearly half of all our residents were born overseas and trace their ancestry to over 150 countries.

“This makes Cumberland’s calendar a yearlong roller coaster ride of festivals, holy days, celebrations and events.

“With such a full calendar, it is expected that we will eventually put to tender the production and installation of banners to ensure residents get the best value.”
