Cumberland City Council will celebrate teachers, students and parents and continue to advocate for greater investment into schools during Education Week (Monday 3 August to Friday 7 August 2020).

“Cumberland City is home to fifty-six schools, which are a cornerstone of the area and a foundation for learning,” Mayor of Cumberland City Steve Christou said.

“I’ve seen and heard the passion for innovation and learning from parents, teachers and students and will continue to call for greater resources to ensure schools are well equipped.”

Mayor of Cumberland City Steve Christou recently wrote to the State Education Minister in relation to the needs of schools across Cumberland City, highlighting the need for a new school hall for Granville South Public School. Early this month Guildford Public School received a new crossing after a group of year six students campaigned for greater safety.

“I’m glad Council is a position to make this happen and am encouraged by the calibre of the students I come across, addressing issues like safety, resourcing and better learning,” Mayor Steve Christou said.

“I want to thank our teachers, students and parents in the community who contribute to making Cumberland City a great place to live. As a large Council we will continue to advocate for your schools, and I encourage you to raise any issues with me directly if Council can be of assistance.”

Cumberland City Council offer a wide variety of free and low cost education programs and activities for schools all year round.

The workshops, attended by more than 600 students in the past 12 months, range in topics, including Sustainability, Arts and Culture, Aboriginal education and the Discover Cumberland City Program, which acquaints students with the history of the area. Council also supports student learning and development with free educational resources across our eight library locations, and access to online e-books, databases and homework help.

With the impacts of COVID-19, Cumberland City Council continues to support learning through a dedicated online webpage with resources, physical and recreational activities.
