For the first time, Council will be bringing in the new year with three events held across multiple locations including Lidcombe, Auburn, and Berala. The program boasts a range of activities including an outdoor cinema screening of Disney’s Turning Red, live entertainment with Lion Dancers and performers at a special Lunar concert, as well as a community day full of activities, workshops, and performances.

Cumberland City Council Mayor Lisa Lake said that Lunar New Year is a great opportunity for the community to get together and celebrate an important cultural tradition.

“This cultural event has a very long history and is symbolic to many of our communities, so Council is very pleased to be hosting this event over three days, allowing all members of the community the opportunity to learn and experience Chinese, South-Eastern and Eastern Asian cultures,” she said.

“I’m really looking forward to welcoming in the Lunar New Year with the Cumberland community. This festive program of film, performance and events will bring us all together for feasting, fun and celebration of life.”

This year the Lunar New Year will celebrate the Year of the Rabbit which symbolises longevity, peace, and prosperity as well as the Year of the Cat which is commemorated by many in the Vietnamese community.

Council’s Lunar New Year program will kick off on Friday 3 February with the Sunset Cinema at Wyatt Park in Lidcombe, followed by a Lunar Concert held at Auburn Central Forecourt on Saturday, and a day full of activities, workshops and performances at Berala Community Centre on Sunday.
