The draft Cumberland Affordable Housing Strategy has been prepared by Cumberland City Council and identifies the key priorities, objectives and initiatives for the delivery of affordable housing within Cumberland City.

These include:

  • Planning controls that contribute to affordable housing feasibility and delivery;
  • Policy initiatives which support the delivery of affordable housing;
  • Effective collaboration with key stakeholders to maximise delivery of affordable housing on the ground; and
  • Continued advocacy with all levels of government and the community to facilitate greater provision of affordable housing.

“Affordable housing is a metropolitan-wide issue for Greater Sydney, with the demands and need for affordable housing disproportionately concentrated in Sydney’s west,” said Mayor Steve Christou.

“It is estimated that there is a housing need of 10,700 new affordable housing dwellings in Cumberland between 2016 and 2036, of which approximately 70% will be needed for very low income households, and 50% of which will need to be larger dwellings.

“Housing affordability is a key consideration for the Cumberland community, particularly given the household structures, demographics and cultural diversity of the population.

“The draft Cumberland Affordable Housing Strategy focuses specifically on the challenges facing Council in responding to the local need for affordable housing. The draft strategy focuses on mechanisms and actions which will be most effective within the Cumberland context.

“The proposal is on public exhibition from Monday 27 July 2020 to 11pm on Friday 21 August 2020. During this time, we encourage you to view the exhibition material on this page and have your say.”
