Locale Festival: Discover adventure in your own backyard

21 June 2017 – Media Release

The inaugural Locale Festival celebrates the people and places of Cumberland with an ambitious series of performances, food tours, workshops and events being held across the Cumberland area from 14-24 July 2017.

Local residents and guests from across Greater Sydney are invited to:

  • Get a taste of Ottoman night life at a night bazar in Auburn
  • Dance their way through a Bollywood street party at Regents Park
  • Discover Cumberland’s Aboriginal heritage and try Bush Tucker in Pemulwuy
  • Live ‘La Dolce Vita’ for a day with the Italian community in Berala
  • Bring their skates, BMX or scooter to a Pop Up skate park in Greystanes

Cumberland Council Interim General Manager Malcolm Ryan said the festival is an invitation to discover the adventures hiding in people’s own backyard.

“Locale Festival is an opportunity to journey through Cumberland with the eyes of a traveller; to rediscover the people and places you only think you know,” Mr Ryan said.

“Our residents come from over 150 countries, making Cumberland rich with stories and story-telling traditions. Locale Festival lets residents tell their stories to people from across Sydney.

“We are delighted that ABC Radio Sydney has chosen to be our principle media partner. You will be able to hear highlights of the festival and interviews with our residents live on 702AM.

“Meanwhile Cumberland’s most enigmatic venues will throw open their doors during the festival, such as the Auburn Gallipoli Mosque, the Sai Temple in Regent’s Park and historic Linnwood House in Guildford.

“Food will also play a starring role in the Locale Festival, with lavish banquets, food tours, cooking classes, pop-up restaurants – there’s even a café for dogs.

“So often it is over a meal that our diverse residents come together to express their culture, share their stories and in the process build the new and vibrant community of Cumberland.

“Rounding out the festival is a strong focus on living sustainably, with workshops getting you out into your own backyard and growing herbs with the kids, making natural cosmetics and brewing your own herbal infusions.”
