Message from Mayor Lake

Mayor Lisa Lake

Cumberland Council has been successful in its bid to receive a grant from the NSW Government under the Get NSW Active Program. Council will receive $770,000 to progress the planning and design work needed to create a new walking and cycling trail between Lidcombe and Sydney Olympic Park. The trail will be created by the conversion of an unused three kilometre rail line, that once serviced this industrial area.

This project will help residents access our parks and open spaces along the corridor. It will also provide an opportunity to cycle or walk directly from Lidcombe to Sydney Olympic Park and view interesting spaces and local history along the way. It is anticipated that the planning and design work will take 18 months to complete.

I recently attended the Cooee Mittigar Exhibition Launch at Granville Library in the Granville Centre. This beautiful children’s book which is written by local Jasmine Seymour and illustrated by Leanne Mulgo Watson explores the Darug culture and teaches people about country and language. A special exhibition of artworks showcasing the process of making the book is now on exhibition at Granville Library until 19 August.

Council has recently resumed management of the Wentworthville Memorial Swim Centre. The Centre is currently closed for Winter, but staff are busy getting it ready to be open early October 2022 for the warm weather ahead. The newly updated facility will accommodate lap swimming and recreational swimming and will run programs including learn to swim classes for infants to adults and aqua aerobics classes. To become a member, join classes or find out more phone 8757 9050 or visit www.cumberland.nsw.gov.au/wenty-pools

Lastly, Council is gearing up for the launch of our biggest and most photographed cultural festivals, the Sydney Cherry Blossom Festival, officially opening this Saturday. The festival has something for everyone. I encourage you to round up the family and come along to meet Hello Kitty, enjoy the activities in her garden party, play a round of Harajuku inspired mini golf and explore the Japanese food village. This year we are limiting the capacity numbers of visitors into our cherry blossom viewing area to ensure everyone can enjoy the cherry blossoms trees at their leisure so it’s really important that you book your tickets in advance to avoid missing out by visiting www.cherryblossomfestival.sydney

Council crews are continuing to respond to pothole requests and are marking out sections of road that require permanent heavy patching to be completed by contractors. Motorists are advised to be mindful of night time roadwork on Hawksview Street and Fairfield Road which includes 80 square metres of asphalt patching.
