Expressions of Interest for Advisory Committees

Community members can apply to be part of the Advisory Committees at Cumberland Council. Expressions of Interest (EOI’s) are open until 4pm Friday 1 March 2019. 

The Advisory Committees act as advisory bodies to Council. Committees meet up to four times per year and operate under Council’s Corporate Governance Framework, including the Code of Conduct.

The purpose of Council’s Advisory Committees is to:

  • Provide a consultative forum for the community to engage with.
  • Provide advice to Council.
  • Inform Council’s policy, program, and service delivery across the subject areas.

Vacancies on Advisory Committees

Cumberland Council is inviting Expressions of Interest (EOI’s) from community members to be part of the following Advisory Committees of Council:

  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Consultative Committee - 3 vacancies 
  • Access Committee (as a sub-committee of the Cumberland Access and Inclusion Panel) - 1 vacancy
  • Arts Advisory Committee - 3 vacancies 
  • Community Safety Committee - 3 vacancies
  • Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Advisory Committee - 3 vacancies
  • Events Committee - 1 vacancy
  • Library Committee - 2 vacancies
  • Youth Advisory Committee - 2 vacancies

Overview of each Committee with the Terms of Reference

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Consultative Committee (ATSIC)

The purpose of the ATSIC Committee is to:

  • Provide a consultative forum to engage with and provide strategic advice to Council.
  • Advocate on issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities in the Cumberland Local Government Area.
  • Inform and improve Council decision making in relation to policy, program, and service delivery.

Access Committee

The purpose of the Access Committee is to:

  • Assist Council to consult and respond to access issues that impact on communities across the Cumberland Local Government Area.
  • Participate in regular community access audits to identify access issues and to discuss potential solutions to address access issues.
  • Provide expert advice on Council community infrastructure projects.

Arts Advisory Committee

The purpose of the Arts Advisory Committee is to:

  • Contribute to Cumberland’s creative, arts and cultural development through provision of quality independent advice to Council on arts and cultural issues as they relate to local Government and Cumberland.
  • Support the implementation of the Culture and Activation Strategy.

Community Safety Committee

The purpose of the Community Safety Committee is to:

  • Participate in regular community safety audits to identify community safety concerns with Council and the Police and to discuss potential solutions to address the issues, including through environmental changes.
  • Provide input into the development and implementation of the Cumberland Crime Prevention Plan.
  • Assist Council to consult and respond to emerging community safety issues that impact on communities within the Cumberland Council area.

Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) Advisory Committee

The purpose of the CALD Committee is to:

  • Inform Council decision making in relation to policy, programs, service delivery, strategic plans, communication methods and engagement practices.
  • Assist Council to consult and respond to emerging settlement-related or other issues that impact on culturally and linguistically diverse communities in the Cumberland area.

Events Committee

The purpose of the Committee is to provide a forum for Council to engage with and obtain feedback from community representatives in the planning and delivery of Council’s:

  • Cultural engagement program
  • Events and activities such as Lunar New Year, Eid, Diwali, and Christmas
  • Local place based events such as the annual Locale Festival.

Library Committee

The purpose of the Library Committee is to:

  • Monitor library progress and provide advice to library management and staff on library strategies and priorities.
  • Provide a forum for discussion on library matters and may make recommendations to Council.

Youth Advisory Committee

The purpose of the Youth Advisory Committee is to:

  • Assist Council to implement key actions in the Cumberland Youth Strategy.
  • Raise the profile of young people in Cumberland and to inform Council decision making in relation to policy, programs, facilities, service delivery and engagement practices.
  • Identify opportunities for collaboration among youth advisory bodies, youth services, young people and community groups working in the Cumberland area.

How to submit an Expression of Interest

Ensure you read through the Terms of Reference for the Committee you are applying for.

To nominate for an Advisory Committee, download and fill in the Expression of Interest form and return to Council.
