On 12 May 2016 Cumberland Council was proclaimed as a new local government area. It is an amalgamated Council made up from most of the former Holroyd City Council, two-thirds of the former Auburn City Council and the former Woodville Ward of Parramatta City Council.

Discover the Cumberland Community
Cumberland is one of the most culturally diverse areas in Australia. Over 240,000 people live in the Cumberland area with more than half of our population were born overseas. Cumberland has the second-highest percentage of people speaking a language other than English in Australia (65.6%). Approximately 150 different languages are spoken in Cumberland.
The Cumberland community is comparatively young, with the median age being 32. Over a third of our population are younger than 25 years old. The majority of our households consist of couples with children (41%).
