Extended library hours a great success

General news
Media Release - 6 February 2019

Cumberland Council has extended the opening hours of Wentworthville Library as a result of feedback collected as part of the development of the 2018 – 2021 Cumberland Library Strategy.

Mayor Greg Cummings said the new opening times have been a great success so far with more than 100 extra people visiting in the first days with numbers continuing to increase.

“Wentworthville library is our third busiest in the LGA reflecting the growing population in the community. The community was asking for extra hours to be able to make the most of the resources and programs on offer, and Council were happy to deliver and align opening times with our other busy libraries,” Mayor Cummings said.

“Our first extended Monday evening had 107 visitors and the amount has doubled since then. Each Sunday afternoon has had between 100 and 120 visitors each time, which is a great turnout. We hope to see these numbers continue to grow.

“There is so much on offer at Cumberland libraries for people of all ages. For parents and young children we have baby rhyme time and story time for toddlers and pre-schoolers; after school activities include Lego club and craft time; for school students there’s the HSC study collection, Studiosity online tutoring resources; and for adults there’s movie clubs, family history resources, book clubs and much more.

“Libraries are a hub of learning and excitement in Cumberland. All Cumberland libraries are air conditioned meaning it’s the perfect place to spend a relaxing afternoon on a hot summers day. There are so many free activities and resources on offer, I encourage all residents to take advantage of the extended hours.

The new Wentworthville library opening hours are:

  • Monday: 9.30am - 8pm (an additional three hours from 5 – 8pm)
  • Tuesday: 9.30am - 5.30pm
  • Wednesday: 9.30am - 5.30pm
  • Thursday: 9.30am - 8pm
  • Friday: 9.30am – 5.30pm
  • Saturday: 9am - 4pm
  • Sunday: 2- 5pm (new opening day)

Cumberland Council maintains a network of eight libraries with a wide range of resources available for all ages.
