Message from the Mayor
Hi Cumberland,
What a busy first half of the year it's been for our community! The past six months have raced by in a whirlwind of events, milestones and moments that brought us together. And through it all, we remained steadfast and united on the things that matter most – our families, our community, and each other.
Coming off the back of our epic Easter celebrations in April, we've continued to come together for several important community events — some in commemoration, others in celebration. A standout highlight has been the remarkable progress at the Guildford Aquatic Centre. Frames are now up and pipework is being installed across the site, with construction moving at an impressive pace toward delivering enhanced leisure opportunities for our residents. As our photos reveal, the new centre has already sparked excitement across the community, and I can't wait to watch this project come to life.
ANZAC Day saw our community come together to honour and remember those who have served and sacrificed for our country. In Dawn Services held at Charles Mance Reserve, Auburn Memorial Park, Granville Memorial Park, and Lidcombe Remembrance Park, Cumberland residents paused to pay their respects and acknowledge the contribution of our brave service men and women.
Last ;month, we also came together to mark Hazara Day, a celebration of the resilience and rich heritage of the Hazara people. It was a meaningful moment for us to reflect on our community, our shared stories and the many things that make Cumberland so diverse.
I also visited the Auburn Basketball Centre of Excellence construction site to see how the project is coming together, and it is already looking incredible. The speed of progress is impressive and watching our vision take shape in real time is awesome! It was a special moment for me, the Sydney Kings and the Sydney Flames players who joined me. This place is going to feel like home very soon. I also had the chance to hold the 2026 NBL Championship trophy. I made sure to remind the builders that we will need a very large trophy cabinet for all the success our teams plan to bring back. The excitement is building, the future is bright, and I am looking forward to sharing more updates as this amazing facility continues to grow.

Green Bins Update
Council is standardising waste services for all freestanding houses in Cumberland. Freestanding houses currently without a green lid bin will soon have one delivered between May and June. There is nothing residents need to do — If you haven’t received your new bin yet, Council will deliver a new bin to your property shortly.

Residents can learn how to reduce their food waste, understand the basics of electric vehicles and discover ways to care for themselves and the community. Come along and get some tips on how to reduce household energy and water usage and save money in the process.

Community Centre Closures July Notice
Council is about to undertake a large-scale maintenance program across our community centres and venues throughout the month of July.

Enrol at Cumberland’s Long Day Care and OOSH Services
Affordable, trusted quality education and care for children aged 0-12. This year, families can enjoy up to 72 hours of subsidised care each fortnight for all children! As an extra bonus, Council is also offering a savings boost with Start Strong funding – up to $2,563 per year for children aged 4+ and $769 for children aged 3.

National Tree Day
Australia's largest tree planting event is almost here! Cumberland City Council, in partnership with Planet Ark, invites you to celebrate National Tree Day.
Join us at one of five locations across Cumberland for a family-friendly day of planting over 2,000 native trees, shrubs and ground cover. Enjoy a free lunch and connect with your local community. Tools and gloves are provided, just bring a hat, closed shoes, and a reusable water bottle. Let's sow the seed of sustainability together!

Road Renewals
Council has recently completed road renewals at Cambridge Street in Berala, and James Street in Lidcombe where over 665m of road in total was resurfaced and new asphalt was laid.
Footpath Projects
Council has recently completed footpath renewals at Richardson Street in Merrylands where over 207m of footpath in total was resurfaced and new concrete was laid.
