Auburn Park officially re-opened at a community open day over the weekend after a complete revamp. Located on Maquarie Road, North Auburn, the park is one of the largest and most popular open spaces in Cumberland.

Transformations were focused on making sure residents in the high density housing around the Park had more practical and modern open spaces to enjoy. Upgrades included:

  • Road surfaces, paths, retaining walls and solar powered lighting
  • Construction of a new amenities building
  • Recreational spaces, outdoor fitness spaces and equipment
  • Shade structures and modern park furniture
  • New cricket pitch and net
  • 3m diameter Water Feature
  • Landscaping including new trees, shrubs, groundcovers, turf and concrete paths
  • Expanded playing fields

Maheir El Mohamad, Cumberland Council’s Project Manager for the upgrade, grew up in North Auburn as a regular visitor of the park and expressed his ‘pride in giving back to the community.’

“It’s been a surreal experience seeing the project come together. I used to live in the street behind the park so I spent a lot of hours playing in the park growing up,” said Maheir.

“I have plenty of fond memories so to be involved in upgrading the park and giving back to the community, it’s pretty special.

“The Park is really heavily used and is surrounded by unit blocks. Every morning and afternoon the Park is full of people of all ages.

“It was pretty run down before the works started and because the park services so many people who don’t have much outdoor space it was really important to not only make it modern and fresh but to provide different types of spaces the community wants to use.

“There are new shelters, seating, a whole new amenities building, cricket nets, exercise equipment and landscaping that gives the park a friendly, natural atmosphere.

“It was a pleasure to be involved in delivering something that is so close to my roots and I’m looking forward to bringing my family down to the park now that’s it open.”
