Verge mowing in former Auburn City Council

14 June 2019 - Media Release

Cumberland Council will discontinue mowing verges (or nature strips) in front of private properties in the suburbs of Auburn, Berala, Lidcombe and Regents Park from 1 July 2019.

The change will free up considerable resources to be reallocated to improving the presentation and amenity of local parks, public spaces and main roads across the LGA.

Mayor Greg Cummings said Council would continue to provide verge mowing services to pensioners and other residents that met Council’s hardship assistance criteria.

“Cumberland Council inherited three different service standards for the maintenance of verges. The new policy introduces a consistent approach that is fair for all our residents,” Mayor Cummings said.

“By no longer mowing verges in front of private properties in a handful of suburbs, we can spend more money keeping our local parks, public spaces and roads presentable across the LGA.

“The changes will also allow Council to expand the provision of our hardship and pension mowing service to include all of Cumberland’s residents.

“This ensures the provision of Council’s verge mowing service is based on a person’s needs and not their postcode.

“Under the change Council will continue to mow nature strips along main roads and areas which are highly trafficable.

“Council will also proactively mow nature strips that present an unreasonable safety risks for residents.

“I invite residents looking for more information to visit cumberland.nsw.gov.au/mowing or call 8757 9000.”
