Photography and Creative Writing Competition

We invite creative writers and photographers to submit a photograph, short story, essay, or poem for your chance to share in a prize pool of over $1000.

We invite creative writers and photographers who live or study in the Cumberland City LGA, to submit a photograph, short story, essay, or poem for your chance to share in a prize pool of over $1000.

Theme 'Locally Led'

Local Government Week is designed to showcase the work councils do in their local communities, including the wide variety of services they provide. This year we’re running a Creative Writing and Photography Competition the theme is ‘Locally Led’.

Locally led is about amplifying local ownership. Cumberland City is the epicentre of modern multicultural Australia led by a proud community that call Cumberland home, this is an opportunity for you to share what you think this means for our City! The winning submissions will be published on council’s social media and other council publications.

We will also exhibit winning photographs and creative writing submissions in our libraires.

Key dates

  • Competition closes - Friday 20 August 2021 at 5pm
  • Judging - Will take place from Monday 23 August to Thursday 26 August 2021
  • Winners contacted by - Friday 27 August 2021
  • Winners announced by - Monday 30 August 2021
  • Winners and selected finalists' creative pieces exhibited - Month of September 2021

Who can enter

Anyone who lives or studies in the Cumberland City Local Government area can enter.

There are three category age groups with prizes for each category.

Primary school students aged 5 to 12 years

First prize $200 eftpos voucher
Second prize $100 eftpos voucher
Third prize $50 eftpos voucher

Secondary school students aged 12 to 18 years First prize $200 eftpos voucher
Second prize $100 eftpos voucher
Third prize $50 eftpos voucher
Adults aged 18 years + First prize $200 eftpos voucher
Second prize $100 eftpos voucher
Third prize $50 eftpos voucher

How to enter

  1. Read the Terms and Conditions before submitting your entry.
  2. Submit your entry using the online entry form. Entrants may have their entry published by council.

Submission requirements

  • Submissions must be about the Cumberland City Local Government Area.
  • Entrants may submit a maximum of one creative writing and one photograph to be judged by the panel.
  • Submissions must be original and written by the entrant.
  • Submissions must be submitted via the online entry form on Council’s website.

Primary school aged submissions

  • Essays and short stories between 300 and 500 words.
  • Poetry length must be less than 100 lines.
  • PDF format only.

Secondary school aged submissions

  • Essays and short stories between 500 and 900 words.
  • Poetry length must be less than 200 lines.
  • PDF format only.

Adults 18 years and over submissions

  • Essays and short stories between 900 and 1300 words.
  • Poetry length must be less than 200 lines.
  • PDF format

Photography submissions

  • Artists are required to upload a digital image of their artwork in JPEG format
  • If your artwork contains people who can be identified, you will need to submit a photography and video consent form (available on Council’s website) for each person. If the person is under the age of 18, a parent or guardian is required to sign the photography and video consent form on their behalf.
