Cumberland City Council will be hosting a series of community stalls, events and chemical clean outs to help residents stay safe and think about how they can reduce their waste.
Council is supporting National Recycling Week held annually from 7-11 November which encourages residents to go beyond the yellow lid bin and rethink of ways to recycle and reduce their waste.
The theme this year is ‘Waste isn't Waste until it's Wasted’ and encourages residents to rethink the way that they are recycling.
To engage with the community, Council’s environment team will be hosting two engagement stalls to promote waste and recycling services available to residents.
Mayor Lisa Lake said that the week is a good opportunity to rethink the way we recycle and learn more about reducing our carbon footprint.
“Council runs a number of programs and initiatives to engage with the community and encourage residents to learn about the importance of recycling and the impacts of climate change on our environment,” she said.
“The effects of climate change are a big concern for our local environment so it’s really important that we work together to reassess, reuse and reduce our impact wherever we can.”
Council also hosted a Kid’s Clothing and Toy Swap where parents were able to bring in their child’s unwanted or unused toys or clothing and exchange them with other residents.
Mayor Lake said the event was a great way for parents to find new items, reduce their impact on the environment and socialise with others.
“We know how quickly children grow out of clothes and get over their toys, so it was a really good opportunity for parents to get something new and help us create more sustainable lifestyles, reduce what we dispose of and reduce the items we buy,” she said.
Additionally, Council will also host a Free Chemical CleanOut on Sunday 20 November for residents who need to declutter and dispose of their unused household chemicals.
