Community News Update

10 January 2023

Message from Mayor Lake

Mayor Lisa Lake

Hello and welcome to 2023!

I hope you had a wonderful time over the break and are feeling fresh and rejuvenated as we embark on another year together. January is shaping up to be a very busy month for Council with a number of community programs, events and activities in the works.

Australia Day Celebrations and Citizenship Ceremonies

As part of our Australia Day celebrations this year, Council will be hosting Citizen of the Year and Community Pride Awards, held in conjunction with a special Australia Day Citizenship Ceremony at the Holroyd Centre on Thursday 26 January. Every year on this day Council welcomes new residents into our community that get to call Cumberland home. An Australia Day event will also be held at Holroyd Gardens from 6pm to 9pm. The event will feature entertainment from main stage performances, with a variety of food vendors, sports and backyard games, an outdoor cinema and a spectacular fireworks display! Australia Day gives people from all walks of life an opportunity to come together and celebrate what it means to be Australian, and I hope to see you all there. Seniors Festival

Council’s popular annual Seniors Festival will be returning this year from Wednesday 1 February with “Celebrate Together” as the central theme. The 12-day program will feature a range of activities for our senior community including bus trips, a golf day, a picnic in the park and online workshops just to name a few. The Seniors Festival is a great opportunity for Cumberland’s senior residents to get together, try something new and meet new people. To register your place or for more information about the festival visit www.cumberland.nsw.gov.au/seniors-festival

Lunar New Year Celebrations

To celebrate Lunar New Year, Council will be hosting a number of events this year as we mark the year of the Rabbit. The weekend of festivities will be held from Friday 3 February to Sunday 5 February. The three-day festival begins with movies in the park on Friday night at Wyatt Park in Lidcombe, followed by a Lunar Concert on Saturday at the Auburn Central Forecourt and a day full of activities, workshops and performances on Sunday at the Berala Community Centre. This is the first time since the start of the pandemic we have been able to celebrate Lunar New Year with our community, so I encourage you all to come along and join in these celebrations.
