Community News Update

17 May 2022

Message from Mayor Lake

Mayor Lisa Lake

Council’s first of its kind street event, Good Vibes Granville, is in full swing this week. Over the course of the week there will be daily creative activities for children and families and at night, a line-up of musicians and art installations. It’s the perfect opportunity to take the family out and explore Granville. I encourage you to refer to our event program by visiting www.cumberland.nsw.gov.au/goodvibes

Council is making a stance against violence, rolling out a new anti-violence campaign to curb assaults towards Council staff, including parking patrol officers and rangers. According to Council’s Work Health and Safety Committee report from January 2020 to April 2022, there were over 65 reported incidents of either physical or verbal assault, with many other incidents that go unreported. I implore the community to work together and be kinder to our rangers and officers who are doing their best to keep us safe every day.

Did you know that Council offers a wide range of services and activities for our senior citizens? As part of our commitment to supporting our elderly residents, Council will be launching a series of new programs including a senior foodie clubs and bus trips to encourage seniors to meet, engage and socialise with other residents. To view our programs and services visit www.cumberland.nsw.gov.au/seniors-support

As part of the NSW Department of Planning and Environment’s Places to Love Program, Cumberland Council will be hosting Lidcombe@Night – Wyatt Park in June to celebrate the cultural diversity of Lidcombe and highlight some of the infrastructure upgrades along Church Street. You are invited to join us and treat your family to a night under the stars with the outdoor cinema playing a family friendly movie, explore the community stalls and engage with clinics hosted by local sports organisations. This Friday marks the national Walk Safely to School Day. This annual event encourages primary school children to walk to school to realise the health benefits of walking and reinforce safe pedestrian behaviour. We are also very pleased with the amount of schools involved in this year’s program. I would like to invite all residents to round up their families and hit the pavement for Walk Safely to School Day, held this Friday 20 May. Visit the website for more information www.walk.com.au/WSTSD/

Lastly, I would like to acknowledge the Holroyd Musical Dramatic Society (HMDS) who celebrated their 50th anniversary recently. HMDS has entertained the Cumberland community over the years with their remarkable musicals and performances, and has showcased some amazing local talent. Congratulations on reaching this significant milestone, and best wishes for the next 50 years!
