Some of Cumberland’s youngest wordsmiths have been recognised and celebrated at Cumberland Council’s Young Writers Awards, held at The Granville Centre.

The inaugural competition provides opportunities for young writers and illustrators to showcase their talents, while nurturing creativity and literary skills in children and young people.

Cumberland Mayor Lisa Lake said she was impressed with the remarkable talent of children and youth.

“In our modern world where most of us use technology, it’s important that we see writing that is extensive, full of depth, sparks emotions and encourages discussion. We want to see that flourish in Cumberland and encourage a love for literature and storytelling,” said Mayor Lake.

“Council is committed to fostering creativity and learning in infants, children and youth by providing platforms and opportunities for them to express themselves and be recognised for their talents.”

The competition, which is an initiative of Council’s Library Committee, is open to children ranging from eight years old to 18. There was an overwhelming response of entries, showcasing the diverse pool of literary talent.

Entries were judged by a panel of literary experts who were impressed by the depth of creativity and originality displayed by the participants.
