A survey by Cumberland City Council has shown strong opposition to the Crescent Parklands development proposal.

The survey, initiated by Council, attracted 270 responses from residents living in Holroyd and surrounding areas.

The Crescent Parklands development proposal would entail 1200 units up to 28 storeys high on Crescent Street in Holroyd.

“The message from residents is fairly clear - over 85% of people who completed the survey, don’t want this massive development going ahead,” said Mayor Steve Christou.

“It’s the kind of development you may see happen next to a major train station but it’s an area that is already heavily choked with traffic. It’s going to create high-density development in the wrong location.

“This huge development has not taken into account Council’s Government-supported Local Strategic Planning Statement and it ignores the huge adverse traffic impacts in the Merrylands area, where it will not only affect locals, but all Sydneysiders travelling on the heavily congested Parramatta Road and Woodville Road.”

The survey results showed that residents’ main concerns included increased traffic, congestion and overcrowding. Existing infrastructure would also need to service a much larger population.

In addition to the 28 days given by the State Government for residents to have their say on this proposal as part of the community consultation process, Council provided residents with a further opportunity to have their say with an online survey.

“We will continue to advocate for our residents and have presented our survey results to the State Government,” said Mayor Christou.
