Green Lid Bin Rollout

From 1 July 2026, Cumberland Council will standardise its domestic waste services for all freestanding houses.

Green Lid Bin Rollout - Improving Your Local Waste Service

Cumberland City Council is working to improve your local waste service. From 1 July 2026, under the new service, every freestanding household will be allocated a:

  • general waste (red‑lid) bin:
  • recycling (yellow‑lid) bin
  • garden waste (green‑lid) bin.

This change will improve service consistency across Cumberland, increase the recovery of garden organics and reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill.

As part of this initiative, green lid bins will be delivered to all remaining freestanding households that currently do not have a garden waste (green‑lid) service.

Council will run an education, engagement and communications campaign to help residents understand how to use their new green lid bin correctly. This will include information on what goes in the bin, how to reduce contamination and tips for managing organic waste at home.

If you currently have a garden waste (greenlid) lid bin, there are no changes to your bin services.

Optional Waste (Red-Lid) Bin Downsize

For all households with a 240L general waste (red‑lid) bin and a 240L recycling (yellow‑lid) bin. You may choose to downsize your general waste bin from a 240L to a 140L red‑lid bin while retaining the 240L recycling and 240L garden waste bins.
