Current Artist in Residence until end of September 2026

Deepa is an interdisciplinary CALD artist, dancer, creative practitioner and arts adviser exploring the connections between movement, music, visual art, culture and wellbeing. With a background in Bharatanatyam and a strong interest in community-led creative practice, she creates participatory experiences that bring people together through movement, rhythm, storytelling, patterns and visual expression.

Her practice explores the relationship between art, movement and mathematics, drawing inspiration from mathematical concepts including geometry, matrices, permutations and combinations to investigate pattern, sequence, symmetry, transformation and the possibilities created when elements are rearranged and connected.

For her Cumberland residency, Deepa is developing Collaborative Field – MADness, an interdisciplinary exploration of Music, Art and Dance. Through collaborative workshops, she explores how rhythm, movement, colour, cultural art forms and mathematical patterns can intersect to create new ways of seeing, moving and making.

The residency also creates a platform for local artists, creative practitioners and audiences to connect through artist–audience dialogue, shared practice and creative exchange. Through Collaborative Field, Deepa invites artists and community members to participate, experiment, ask questions and share perspectives, creating opportunities to discover new creative connections and build relationships for future collaboration within Cumberland.
