Artist in Residence at The Granville Centre - April to June 2026
Hayley Sophia Coghlan is a Western Sydney based artist and art therapist. Her practice spans healthcare, community and educational settings supporting children and adults across the lifespan. She is currently influenced by her work in art-based psychotherapy to explore human relationships, emotions and neuroscience in painting.
Her project involved developing a series of paintings that translate emotional and relational concepts into visual form. Each painting functions as a visual mnemonic – a gentle memory tool for understanding the complexities of human emotion and the need for connection.
The project seeks to bridge therapeutic insight and aesthetic experience, offering the local community a reflective and supportive encounter with the emotional and social exigence of being human in the here and now.
Hayley chose The Granville Centre Art Gallery residency because it is familiar space to make art. The gallery is in her local community where she has enjoyed many vital community connections.
The residency experience is strengthening her confidence and visibility as an emerging artist, helping her to expand her practice beyond therapeutic settings into a more public and participatory context.
