Pursuit of Excellence Award
All schools within Cumberland are invited to nominate an exceptional student for Council’s annual Pursuit of Excellence Award. The Pursuit of Excellence program recognises one student per school for their outstanding achievements in the areas of school spirit, personal excellence or friendship and peer support. Nominations open in August of each year and schools will be contacted directly to take part.

Road Safety Educational Resources
Council offers Road Safety information to all schools in the local area. Access online resources including fact sheets in community languages to address illegal driving and parking around schools. Council can also provide schools with free corflute signs displaying key safety messaging.

Road Safety Concerns at your School
To help improve the roads around your school, you can complete and submit a School Safety Online Survey or contact Council directly to discuss.

Road Safety Talks
Are you organising a kindergarten parent information session? Or want some education for young drivers? Council can deliver a free road safety talk tailored to your specific audience.

Resource Recovery
Council offers a range of educational and interactive Waste Education Programs to primary and high school students. The workshops can also be tailored to suit your school’s needs. Topics include composting and worm farming, waste minimisation, Council waste services, recycling, and littering.

Place and Engagement Opportunities
Schools can contact Council requesting general engagement and consultation opportunities. This could involve informing students on what Council offers, services and further educating them about the Cumberland community. Students are also encouraged to take part and have their say on Council matters open for exhibition.

Swim Centre Bookings
School groups can request swim centre bookings for a variety of events including swimming carnivals. Carnivals can be booked year-round and will be subject to availability.

Learn to Swim
Swimming is an essential skill we aim to instill in all children and young people. Council offers a range of learn to swim programs across multiple swim centres which aims to build foundational swimming skills and confidence around water.

Free School Holiday Programs
Council offers free and accessible school holiday programs and activities to children and young people, 5 - 18 years, living in the Cumberland LGA. The programs have a health and wellbeing focus, aiming to engage Cumberland’s youngest residents in impactful Council activities. Programs are delivered in a variety of settings throughout the community including parks, libraries, community centres and more.

Primary Schools
Bush School Excursions
The Bush School is an open nature play space in Central Gardens Nature Reserve, Merrylands. Council offers facilitated nature play sessions for groups of children, including school groups. Bush School excursions allow children to explore nature by learning about changes in seasons, local wildlife/plants, appreciate biodiversity and sustainability. Schools can request a 90-minute session for up to 50 students, teachers are required to supervise the children and support them with the activities. Fees and charges apply.

Healthy Kids Hub
Council offers an array of interactive and engaging free health and wellbeing programs throughout the year for primary school aged children. The programs run during the school term and differ from term to term.

Education and Care: OOSH
Council offers Out of School Hours Care (OOSH) during school terms at Guildford West Public School, Ringrose Public School, Sherwood Grange Public School, Widemere Public School and Parramatta West Public School. Additionally, Council provides transport for children attending Merrylands East Public School, Greystanes Public School as well as St Margaret Marys Primary School to the associated OOSH centre. School Holiday Care
School Holiday Care is offered for primary school aged children aged 5 to 12 years during the school holiday periods. Onsite programs run at Sherwood Grange Public School and Ringrose Public School. Fees and charges apply.

High Schools
Work Experience and Placements
Council offers work experience for young people aged 15 years and above. The programs runs between February and November annually. Additionally, Council provides unpaid work placements for students completing VET courses or Duke of Edinburgh.

Volunteer Programs
Students aged 16 years and over can apply for Council’s engaging Volunteer Program. The Volunteer Program provides residents of Cumberland with diverse opportunities to contribute to the community. Volunteering can provide you with valuable work experience and opportunities to contribute to community life, meet new people and learn new skills.

Youth Participation Opportunities
Council offers a range of ways for young people aged 12 to 25 years to have input and be heard. Young people who live, study, work or visit Cumberland are encouraged to share their views and get involved in relevant Council programs and events. Opportunities range from Council’s Youth for Youth (Y4Y) Group to taking part in targeted consultation sessions and having input in how and what initiatives are delivered for young people.
