Volunteer to help keep Cumberland Clean
Volunteers can play an important role to help remove litter from our environment and protect our environment and wildlife. Our Clean Up Cumberland program recognises the important work volunteers do, provides support for volunteer groups and encourages others to get involved.
How to get involved
1. Register your clean-up
We ask all groups to register their clean-up activities with Clean Up Australia.
Please go to the Clean Up Australia Website:
https://register.cleanup.org.au/
Registering means you're covered by Clean Up Australia's public liability insurance - and can be counted as a participant.
It also helps spread your efforts across our Council area and avoid two groups cleaning up in the same location.
2. Select your location
Choose any spot in the Cumberland area near you that you think needs a clean-up.
If you need help picking a location, contact us for ideas.
Make sure your location is safe and accessible and that you have a plan to dispose of the rubbish after the event.
3. Decide on a date and time
Choose a date and time that suits you.
4. Decide on equipment
Clean Australia can provide clean up kits. Please allow two weeks for postage of supplies.
If you need extra supplies Council can supply bags and gloves for your group if you need them.
You can email Resource Recovery Team: resourcerecovery@cumberland.nsw.gov.au or call 02 8757 9000.
Please ensure to give us prior notice so we can arrange the equipment in time for your event.
5. Consider food, fun and park bookings
Have fun and make a day out of. Consider packing a picnic and having lunch together.
6. Plan for risk
It is your responsibility to plan your own risk management for the activity. We will provide some tips that can support your risk planning.
7. Where to leave the litter
We will provide you with advice for where to leave the collected litter. Just email us your clean up details to our resource recovery team. Along with your Clean Up Australia registration confirmation.
8. More information
If you need any further information, you can email the Resource Recovery Team: resourcerecovery@cumberland.nsw.gov.au or call 02 8757 9000.
We love to hear how your event went. Feel free to send us photos of your group with your bags of rubbish collected.
Report littering from a car
If you see any litter fall or thrown from a car, you can report it online through the NSW Environment and Protection Authority Website.
The NSW Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) can issue a $250 fine to an individual for littering from a vehicle or $500 for a corporation.
Litter free sports grounds
Do you play sport in Cumberland City? Empower your sporting teams and visiting players to keep Cumberland clean.
Download the Guide for Litter Free Sporting Events (PDF, 425KB) for your sporting club to use.
This guide is about Council and Clubs working together to foster a litter free environment at sports grounds.
Drink bottles are the most commonly littered items on sports day. Encourage players to bring a reusable bottle from home, and refill at the grounds. There are more ideas within the guide.
You can order an all-weather PVC poster checklist for Litter Free Events to display in your clubhouse. For your free poster, phone Council on 8757 9000.
