Backyard swimming pool safety

Drowning is a leading cause of accidental death in very young children. With hundreds of backyard pools in the area, Council urges you to follow regulations.

Help prevent drownings

In NSW, private swimming pool safety is legislated by the Swimming Pools Act 1992 and the Swimming Pools Regulation 2018.

The Act was introduced to improve pool safety for children and requires pool barriers and warning notices to be put up around the pool. Other important steps include:

  • Keeping the pool barrier in good condition
  • Keeping gates secure
  • Providing adult supervision at all times
  • Ensuring your children can swim
  • Learn resuscitation (CPR) training
  • Have a resuscitation chart nearby
