History of Cumberland Bush Fire Management
In December of 2019, a large grass fire broke out in the west of Cumberland LGA. Council has prepared several bushfire Management Plans over the years, which were amended after 2019. As the demographic of the Cumberland LGA changes, Council is looking to consolidate these plans, capturing any new and relevant data. The Bush Fire Management Plan provides advice for the establishment of bush fire management zones that will enable:
- the effective application of the strategies, and
- appropriate hazard reduction activities
- to avoid detrimental impacts on species, communities, populations, and culturally significant assets in a 5-year works schedule.
Following the events of 2019, Council has worked on clearing and maintaining any high-risk, bushfire-prone areas by removing any unhealthy and overgrown vegetation through the guidance of the Council’s current bushfire management plans and the assistance of Fire and Rescue NSW.
