Mayor Steve Christou has condemned vandalism which occurred inside Auburn Gallipoli Mosque over the weekend.

“We extend our condolences to those who attend this place of worship. We have zero tolerance for any kind of act of this nature and believe everyone must respect the sanctity of these spaces,” said Mayor Steve Christou.

“I stand in solidarity with the Gallipoli Mosque and the individuals affected by this disappointing and unfortunate incident.

“We are one of the most multicultural regions across the state and it’s a shame that our community has to experience something like this.

“The Gallipoli mosque symbolises the shared identity of Australian society and the Australian Turkish Muslim community since 1979. I am proud of their hard work and contributions to Cumberland City.

“This type of behaviour is unacceptable and Council supports the Gallipoli Mosque and the Islamic community during this time.”
