The gravesite of the first mayor of the Municipality of Prospect and Sherwood, the predecessor of the former Holroyd Council, Arthur Holroyd has been restored after years of neglect.

Mayor of Cumberland City Council Steve Christou says this is a win for those who uphold the importance of our heritage.

“This has been an important step in recognising those who came before us. I am honoured to be able to pay my respects to a man of history and a forefather of the area.

“I’d like to commend Councillor Garrard and the Heritage Committee for their continued advocacy to maintain the gravesite,” Mayor Steve Christou said.

Arthur Holroyd was a member of the NSW Legislative Assembly and was largely responsible for establishing the municipality of Holroyd in 1872.

Holroyd died in 1887 and is buried at the Rookwood Cemetery.
