Cumberland Council is saddened by the passing of former Holroyd City Council Councillor James (Jim) Thomas Anthony Morris.

Jim was first elected as a councillor in 1987 and served until September 1995. He was part of Holroyd Council when it achieved city status in 1991 and helped the organisation navigate the sweeping changes that followed the Local Government Act 1992.

During his time on Council Jim served on several committees including the Finance and Works committee, Development and Community Services Committee, Management Review Committee, and Annual Report Committee.

Jim was a passionate advocate for preserving the region’s history, commissioning a book of local history and developing a Heritage Register to record significant historic buildings and sites in the area.

This passion stayed with him after leaving office, with Jim remaining an active member of the Holroyd Heritage Register Committee and the Mays Hills Cemetery Committee.

Jim was a proud Merrylands resident and after marrying his wife Lynette moved to Lockwood Street where they brought up their daughter Rachel.

Jim and Lynette were both active members of the Australian Labor Party and served on Holroyd Council at different times: Lynette from 1977 – 1987 and Jim from 1987 – 1995.

Jim and Lynette dedicated their lives to their community and our area is better off for their service.

On behalf of all the Council staff who had the pleasure to know and work with Jim Morris, I would like to extend my condolences to his friends and family.

Mayor Greg Cummings,

Cumberland Council
