Cumberland City Council is rolling out a CCTV system in the Merrylands CBD, which will significantly enhance Council’s current CCTV in Public Spaces program and provide direct access to the Police.

"Our CCTV Program is one of several initiatives designed to facilitate greater community safety. Its objective is to reduce crime, in association with a range of other crime prevention strategies," said Mayor Steve Christou.

"Council has strategically placed CCTV cameras on Merrylands Road between Military Road and Treves Street, with the aim to improve security for the community, crime detection and prosecution action.

"There are going to be 17 cameras installed, 2 of which are licence plate recognition equipped. The aim is to centralise the camera systems in our LGA whilst also working together with NSW Police to help provide a safer environment for Cumberland.

"The new CCTV system will also provide a platform for the existing security systems for Council’s libraries, community centres, environmental spaces, sports fields and public areas to reduce crime levels by deterring potential offenders and aid in apprehension of offenders.

"While we recognise that crime will never entirely be prevented, CCTV can bring benefits to the community and assist in reducing crime which can lead to enhanced public safety in Cumberland."

The project is expected to be completed by June 2020. The project has been funded by the NSW Government through the Stronger Communities Fund.
