Continued funding from Cumberland Council is supporting the regeneration of Prospect Creek in Smithfield. Learn more about the project on 23 August 2018 at Possums at Prospect; a twilight story telling showcase hosted by Conservation Volunteers.

“Conservation Volunteers have been regenerating Prospect Creek in Smithfield for years, removing rubbish, invasive weeds and planting native flowering trees,” Mayor Greg Cummings said.

“In 2017, with continued funding from Cumberland Council and a generous grant from the Granville Diggers Club, a habitat regeneration project was launched: ReWilding Prospect Creek.

“Gather around, sip hot cocoa, hear about how the community has come together to repair this riparian corridor and learn about the cool critters who call Prospect Creek home.

“This a free event, and a great way to learn more about biodiversity and the hidden secrets within Sydney's urban green spaces.”

Conservation Volunteers ecologist, David Jones said Prospect Creek is a critical waterway for Sydney; carrying water down through to The Georges River and out to Botany Bay.

“We hope that this work along the creek will improve the quality of water heading out into our oceans; while providing food and shelter for native animals moving about Western Sydney,” Mr Jones said.

“Since we started ‘rewilding’, hundreds of local and international volunteers have made this project possible, including students from Granville TAFE and Western Sydney University.

“Conservation Volunteers will celebrate these contributions at our twilight showcase this August; an evening open to all members of the public. Join us as we unveil who has moved into the habitat boxes at Prospect Creek.”

The event will be held from 5.30-6.15pm on 23 August 2018, at Long Street Park, Smithfield.

This is a free event but bookings are essential for catering purposes at possumsatprospect.eventbrite.com.au.
