The first stage of work on the All Abilities Playground at Central Gardens in Merrylands West is now complete and children can enjoy the space for the rest of the school holidays.

“The All Abilities Playground can be enjoyed by everyone no matter what their abilities are,” said Mayor for Cumberland, Steve Christou. “This makes the Cumberland LGA an even more inclusive city.

“We wanted to provide a facility where Cumberland residents and visitors from outside the LGA can be active and enjoy what the city has to offer.

“As the father of twin girls, I think it’s important for our children to play in a park that has no barriers and our play spaces should reflect this.

“This playground is an exciting achievement for Cumberland and it is a great example of what we can achieve when we work with the NSW Government and the community, for the community.

“Children and families can start to use the space during the school holidays and I’m looking forward to this playground being complete and ready for the official opening in February.”

Works include the installation of a water hand pump for water play, shade sails, accessible foot paving and new planting. There are existing BBQ picnic areas and animal enclosures at the site.

Minor landscaping and climbing net equipment will be installed in the coming weeks. All play equipment installed to date has been certified as compliant and safe to use.

The All Abilities Playground was funded by the NSW Government Stronger Communities Fund and the Everyone Can Play Grant Programme.
