9 June 2016 – Media Release

The Governor of NSW, His Excellency General the Honourable David Hurley officially opened PCYC Auburn, currently the largest of its kind in Australia, on Wednesday 8 June. He was joined by the Deputy Premier the Honourable Troy Grant, and NSW Opposition Leader and Member for Auburn, Mr Luke Foley. Viv May, Administrator of Cumberland Council, welcomed the distinguished guests and sad the council looked forward to “working with PCYC Auburn to engage and involve young people and their families in this new community facility.”
“Our population in Cumberland Council is young, with 40 per cent under the age of 24 years. This strong and growing concentration of young people in our local community will benefit enormously from being able to access the PCYC Auburn. There is certainly no better place or no community more deserving of this facility.” Viv May said.
“We have been aware for a considerable period that our young people have a profound need for a place of their own – a place where they can express themselves, seek support, be given opportunities, be healthy and interact with others in a positive way. Auburn PCYC will be that place.
“Our thanks must go to the NSW Government and PCYC NSW, for making this project a reality and committing considerable resources to the youth of Auburn and the broader Cumberland area.” Mr May said.
The project was conceived in 2011 and involved the former Auburn City Council working alongside 30 partner agencies to attract funding. Council was able to provide the land and building, with the State Government providing the necessary $2.5 million to create the facility.
PCYC Auburn has plenty of facilities, programs and activities for locals to enjoy. For the full list, and to apply for a membership, please visit www.pcyc.org.au/auburn.
