Councillor Steve Christou has been elected as the new Mayor of Cumberland.
Councillor Christou takes over the position from Councillor Greg Cummings, who has served as Mayor for the last two years.
Commenting on the appointment, the newly elected Mayor Christou said:
“It’s a tremendous honour to be appointed as the Mayor of Cumberland and I will represent Cumberland Council and our residents to the best of my ability.
“Cumberland is in a unique position to achieve real progress over the next 12 months and beyond.
“My key priorities include developing Wentworthville into a vibrant energetic community and ensuring the delivery of significant capital works projects including redevelopment of Granville Park and the Granville Centre.
“Additionally, I would like to see Cumberland achieve the city status it deserves. I will also ensure we get the basics right, delivering quality services to our community in the areas they expect.”
Outgoing Mayor Cummings said it was a privilege to serve as Cumberland’s first Mayor.
“In the past two years we have worked hard to lay a strong foundation for a stable and successful Council,” he said.
“This has involved a strong focus on making Cumberland a great place to live by continuing to deliver quality services to the community and improving the community’s experience with Council. There is no doubt that significant progress has been made.
“I’m pleased to be able to hand over the reins to Councillor Christou.
“I want to thank my fellow Councillors and Council staff for working alongside me to ensure our vision is realised.”
Councillor Eddy Sarkis was also elected as Deputy Mayor during tonight’s Extraordinary Meeting of Council.
