Cumberland City Council is encouraging students and local schools to create and pitch their ideas for getting active and adopting healthy eating habits as part of the Healthy Kids program.

“With 80 per cent of Aussie kids not getting enough physical activity and only two and a half percent eating enough fruits and vegetables, we need to take action,” said Mayor Steve Christou.

“In today’s age of iPhones, iPads and Xboxes we need to do more to get kids active and encourage healthy eating habits. This is our next generation and we owe our kids the best possible start in life.

“Cumberland’s ‘Healthy Kids Pitch’ is open to all primary and secondary schools across Cumberland so we are calling for schools to get their thinking caps on and pitch their Healthy Kids idea via a short video.”

Winning schools will be presented with a Healthy Kids Pitch prize of $5,000 to introduce the idea in their school. The winners of the competition will be announced in April this year.

Council’s Healthy Kids program sees local sporting stars, chefs and schools running educational seminars for children.

In 2018, Councillor Christou moved a Council motion to introduce the Healthy Kids program. The initiative now reaches at least half of all schools in the Cumberland LGA.
