Message from the Mayor
Federal Budget 2025-2026
I was pleased to see the Federal Budget include some support for those in need. From July 2026, further tax cuts will come for those earning less than $45,000 per year. If you earn over $45,000, you'll get a $268 tax cut in the 2026-27 financial year. Households and businesses will get a further $150 off their energy bills from 1 July. The Government also plans to wipe 20 percent off all student debt from 1 July if re-elected. Medicare is getting a major funding boost with the goal to get 90% of GP visits to be free by 2030. Paid Parental Leave will also increase to 24 weeks from 1 July 2025 and parents receiving this payment will also receive an additional 12 per cent of their government payment as a contribution to their super fund. These changes will go some way to bridging the superannuation gap between men and women. If you are facing difficulties, don't struggle alone. There is a range of Council support as well as external services providing assistance which can be found at www.cumberland.nsw.gov.au/assistance
Music, Dance, and Celebration: Nowruz Shines in Cumberland!
How good was our Nowruz event! I had an awesome time celebrating with our vibrant community on Saturday, 22 March. Merrylands came alive with the sounds of traditional music, the vibrancy of cultural performances, and the energy of dancers as we welcomed a new season together. From the mesmerising performances of the Hathor Iranian Dance Ensemble to the beats of DJ Allen, and the lively sets from Nayestan Music Band and Ability Beyond Boundaries, the atmosphere was electric! Seeing families and friends laughing, dancing, and embracing the rich traditions of Nowruz, was a great reminder of how lucky we are to live in an area as diverse and vibrant as Cumberland. A huge thank you to everyone who made this event such a success. I can't wait to celebrate with you at our next event.
