Message from the Mayor
Merrylands RSL Sub-Branch
Remembrance Day Memorial Service
On 11 November, I had the honour of attending our local Remembrance Day Service at Merrylands Memorial Park. Remembrance Day, also known as Armistice Day or Poppy Day, holds great significance for many of us. Annually, the date commemorates the end of World War I, and remembers the lives lost in service to our country during both World Wars and other conflicts. Thank you to Merrylands RSL Club for bringing community groups and local schools, including Hilltop Road Public School, Merrylands East Public School and Greystanes Public School together to honour our veterans. Lest we forget.
Diwali Festival 2024
Council’s colourful and vibrant Diwali celebrations took over the streets of Wentworthville on Saturday 9 November. Over 15,000 people attended this year's festival, uniting people from all backgrounds and cultures to share in the spirit of Diwali. Diwali, known as the festival of lights, or Deepavali, is one of the most important Hindu festivals that is celebrated in the subcontinent.
It was wonderful to see families and friends come together to enjoy the music, food and dancing. This event was a great reminder of the rich cultures we have here in Cumberland, and the importance of continuously embracing and celebrating the joys and connections they bring to our community. I would like to thank everyone who attended and contributed to the event – it was a great success!
Linnwood House Open Day
On 10 November, I had the pleasure of attending the open house of the historic Linnwood House in Guildford. Listed on the NSW State Heritage Register in February 2003, Linnwood House was built in 1891 and represents a significant part of our local history and heritage here in Cumberland. Thank you to the Friends of Linnwood for their dedicated efforts in protecting and preserving this important heritage gem.
