Message from the Mayor
Happy Diwali
Cumberland City Council will celebrate the Diwali Street Festival on Saturday 9 November from 5pm to 10pm. The festival will illuminate the streets of Wentworthville and bring the community together for a night filled with light, culture and joy. As we come together for the Diwali Street Festival, I invite the entire Cumberland community to celebrate in the cultural diversity that makes us so special. Families can anticipate an evening filled with entertainment, food, stalls, and much more. I hope to see you there.
Minister’s visit to Auburn Long Day Care Centre
On Thursday 24 October, the Minister for Education, the Hon. Jason Clare MP, visited Auburn Long Day Care Centre (LDCC) to observe the innovative use of the ELLA App, through which children in Western Sydney are exploring the Hindi language. Auburn LDCC has incorporated Hindi into the curriculum, including activities like a Hindi alphabet puzzle. The ELLA learning tree display enhances the learning experience, with colour pencil baskets labelled with bilingual Hindi-English labels. During the visit, Minister Clare and I participated in group time, as educators engaged the children with stories and rhymes. Many play areas are also labelled in Hindi, alongside other languages spoken by families in the community. Our Education and Care Services offer a wide range of options, including Long Day Care, Family Day Care, Outside of School Hours Care and School Holiday Care.

Citizen of the Year 2025
Being a leader within the community is a great honour and a privilege. The journey begins with a core commitment to serve, and through dedication, contribute to strengthening the community. The upcoming 2025 Citizen of the Year Awards present an excellent opportunity to recognise outstanding individuals who tirelessly and passionately work to enhance our community. Nominations are now open. If you know someone who has made a meaningful impact within the Cumberland community, I encourage you to nominate them for this well-deserved recognition.

Cumberland Small Business Month
Last month I was delighted to attend Cumberland's Business Converge event at the Holroyd Centre in Merrylands. This event was a great opportunity for small business owners to make new connections, build relationships and learn new strategies to grow their business. I am proud that Cumberland boasts over 25,000 small businesses operating within our local area. We are home to one of the most culturally diverse business communities in Sydney, with nearly 60% of Cumberland businesses being owned by individuals from multicultural backgrounds, reflecting our area’s rich diversity. If you are planning on opening a small business in Cumberland, Council is here to support you.
