Cumberland Welcomes New Mayor and Deputy Mayor to the new term of Council


We are pleased to announce the newly elected Mayor of Cumberland City Council, Councillor Ola Hamed alongside Councillor Michael Zaiter as Deputy Mayor, following an Extraordinary Meeting of Council on 16 October.

Mayor Ola Hamed, who has served as a Cumberland Councillor for seven years, will lead the Council as Mayor for the next two years.

Commenting on her appointment, Mayor Hamed said “I'm truly honoured to be sworn in as the Mayor of Cumberland City Council and as the first ever Muslim woman of Lebanese heritage. Alongside of course Deputy Mayor Zaiter who also happens to be of Lebanese heritage.”

“Our Labor and our Liberal partnership reflects our commitment to a prosperous future for the residents of Cumberland. One of my immediate priorities is to unify this chamber, and indeed the community, because that's what civic leadership should always be about.”

Local Citizen of the Year Awards 2025


Nominations for the Local Citizen of the Year Awards are now open. Winners will be announced at a special ceremony on Australia Day in 2025. If you know someone who has made an outstanding contribution to the local community, we want to hear from you!

Footpath Renewals

Council has recently completed footpath renewals at Cartwright Avenue in Merrylands, Brotherton Street in South Wentworthville, and Union Road in Auburn, where over 700m of footpath in total was resurfaced and new concrete was laid.

Create Cumberland: Our Community Strategic Plan

Council is holding another two interactive sessions to get feedback from the community about the Community Strategic Plan (CSP).

At each location, there will be a FREE SAUSAGE SIZZLE, and the first 50 attendees who complete a survey will receive a FREE ACAI BOWL. These sessions will allow you to share your thoughts and get involved in the fun activities.

  • Auburn Centre for Community: Monday 28 October, 11am to 2pm
  • The Holroyd Centre: Saturday 2 November, 11am to 2pm

Diwali Festival 2024


Council will be lighting up Wentworthville for the Diwali Festival.

Explore the street bazaar, join in the fun at the Bollywood Block Party, try out a range of South Asian and Indian cuisine, and get hands-on with the arts and cultural activities.
