Message from the Mayor
Remembrance Sunday Commemorative Service
On Sunday 3 November, I attended the Remembrance Sunday Commemorative Service at the Sydney War Graves Cemetery in Rookwood, to recognise the servicemen and women who fought to defend our country. Within Rookwood Cemetery, there are over 1,800 unofficial war graves that memorialise men and women who were involved in World War I. Each year, a handful of individuals with unmarked graves are selected to receive monumental conservation work on their final resting places in Rookwood. Lest we forget.
Rotary Club of Granville Visit
I had the pleasure of meeting representatives from the Rotary Club of Granville on Monday 4 November, to discuss and explore joint projects that can serve and uplift our community. The Rotary Club has long been a cornerstone of local service, bringing together individuals with a shared commitment to making Granville and our LGA a better place. Their efforts in promoting civic responsibility, supporting local charities, and organising community events are invaluable. Thank you to the Rotary Club of Granville for their ongoing service and commitment to the community. I look forward to our continued collaboration in the future. 16 Days of Activism
In collaboration with Parramatta Cumberland Family and Domestic Violence Prevention Committee and Granville Rotary, Council will be hosting a march for the prevention of domestic violence. The march will be held on Thursday 28 November from 1pm and will start at Merrylands Oval and finish at Merrylands Civic Square. 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence is an international campaign that runs from 25 November to 10 December annually. The aim is to call for the prevention and elimination of violence against women and girls. The global theme for this year’s 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence is “UNITE! Invest to prevent violence against women and girls.” If you or anyone you know has experienced any kind of violence and are in need of assistance, visit our website for a list of resources in multiple languages: www.cumberland.nsw.gov.au/domestic-and-family-violence
Sydney Murugan Temple Diwali Celebrations
In celebration of Diwali, I had the privilege of celebrating an inspiring day with the Hindu community at the Sydney Murugan Temple in Mays Hill. As one of Sydney's most renowned Hindu temples, it serves as a spiritual centre for Tamil and South Indian communities in Sydney, and provides a space for worship, festivities and cultural activities. I’m grateful for the opportunity to connect with leaders and community members, and celebrate the tapestry of cultures we have here in Cumberland.
