Message from the Mayor

Mayor Lisa Lake

16 Days of Activism March

On Thursday 28 November, the Cumberland community came together and marched from Merrylands Oval to Merrylands Civic Square. We marched to show our support to end violence against women and girls. Council hosted the march in partnership with the Parramatta Cumberland Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Committee and Granville Rotary. The march was a powerful reminder of the urgent need to invest in prevention and create a safer, more inclusive community for all. In 2024 alone, 62 women have been violently killed in 2024. Those numbers are horrifying, yet DFV is still a systemic cultural issue occurring across all socioeconomic and demographic groups. This is a problem that strikes at the core of not only our community but the entire world. We must Unite and remember “It all starts with RESPECT”. I am grateful to everyone who participated and helped raise awareness for this vital cause. Together, we continue to stand united in our commitment to end domestic violence.

Seniors Christmas Concerts

Council is celebrating this special time of year with a series of free Seniors Christmas Concerts. Last week, I had the pleasure of attending the Seniors Christmas Concert at Auburn Town Hall. It was a wonderful afternoon filled with joyful melodies, a delicious two-course meal and the company of our delightful senior citizens; they sure know how to have a great time! It was truly heartwarming to see everyone come together to enjoy this festive celebration. I’m looking forward to seeing more of our senior residents at the upcoming Seniors Christmas Concerts across Cumberland.

“Gift of Time” Volunteer Recognition Ceremony

I recently attended the “Gift of Time” Volunteer Recognition Ceremony at The Holroyd Centre. The ceremony, hosted by Council, acknowledged the incredible community spirit of Council volunteers and recognised their contributions to our thriving community. Without the time, devotion and hard work of our incredible volunteers, the benefits our community stands to gain from the work of these selfless people would never be realised. From the bottom of my heart, I thank you for all that you do. You not only bring your skills but your heart, and that is something truly invaluable. We celebrate you every day, but today especially is about acknowledging how important your contribution is to our wider community.
