Get a green garden bin

You could reduce your waste by getting a green garden bin, now available to residential non-strata properties across Cumberland.

There are 2 green bin options to choose from:

  1. A 240 litre garden waste bin and smaller general waste (red) bin.
  2. A 240 litre garden waste bin and larger general waste (red) bin.

To lower your rates and help reduce waste to landfill, Council encourages residents to opt in for a garden waste bin and smaller general waste bin. You'll no longer need a large general waste bin as you will be diverting waste from your general waste bin into your new garden waste bin.

Garden waste bins will be collected on a fortnightly basis - the alternate week to your recycle bins and are for leaves, small twigs and branches, grass clippings and flowers and prunings.

Waste bins, despite the size you select, will continue to be collected weekly.

If you choose to change your waste service, please complete the Domestic waste service application (PDF, 77KB)

Please note: As there is a possible variation to rates, the ratepayer/owner is required to complete the form. If you are renting, you may want to contact your real estate agent/landlord for more information.

Once collected from the kerb, your garden waste will go to Suez’s organic platform in Eastern Creek where it is turned into nutrient-rich compost and mulch to be reused.

Collections and costs

Collections happen every 2 weeks. These are done by United Resource Management (URM), and you will be charged for the service from the day your green bin is delivered.

If you request a new service and you have already paid your rates in full, you can apply for a refund on some of your garbage collection from Council. To discuss rates and necessary paperwork, call Council on 02 8757 9000.
