Each year, Cumberland City Council offers residents four free Council collection services, allowing them to get rid of two cubic metres of household items or waste that can’t be reused or recycled.

This initiative, which is part of Council’s Environmental Management Framework, aims to create a cleaner, greener community and helps combat illegal dumping.

“Levels of illegal dumping are much higher than they were compared to this time last year and this could be due to COVID-19 and more people being at home,” Mayor Steve Christou said.

“We don’t want to fine people up to $8,000 for illegal rubbish dumping but the reality is cleaning up comes at an expense to Council and ultimately ratepayers.

“Ratepayers are encouraged to book a clean-up throughout the year and take advantage of this opportunity to get rid of their unwanted items.

“Make a booking for the service, give Council two weeks’ notice and place items out the night before the agreed collection day.

“Importantly, if you see a neighbour put out a collection, please don’t add to their items. If you’re a ratepayer book your own collection and take advantage of this service.”

Key tips to ensure a successful collection:

  • Neatly stack items/waste to ensure footpaths and walkways are not obstructed.
  • Keep your collection within two cubic metres in volume.
  • Only put out items you’ve specified for pick up when you book the service.
