Carers in the Cumberland Council LGA are invited to relax in a green oasis with a free outdoor program, Green Gym for Carers, a 14-week program to be held at the Auburn Botanic Gardens precinct by the Peacock Gallery from 19 February.
The aim of the Green Gym for Carers is to improve the health and well-being of local carers by reducing stress and promoting outdoor and environment-based group activity.
“Carers provide an important service in the Cumberland community so it is just as important that there are services available to allow them some well-deserved respite,” Mayor Greg Cummings said.
“What better way to do this through the Green Gym for Carers program where carers are immersed in the beautiful surrounds of the Auburn Botanic Gardens precinct and the local nursery.
“This is an excellent program aimed at fostering carers’ mental well-being while also being an opportunity for them to learn new skills and help improve the local environment.”
The Green Gym for Carers program runs for 14 weeks but is flexible according to each carer’s needs. The activities are held beside Duck River where participants will meet other carers, become a friend of the award winning Auburn Botanic Gardens and have an opportunity to focus on their own health and well-being.
Participants will spend time with other carers during a three-hour session where they will take part in activities such as growing seedlings, weeding garden beds and learning about plant care.
With peacocks wandering freely around the site, participants will enjoy a morning or afternoon session with a background of birdsong in the famous Japanese Gardens or under shelters in the community nursery.
The program will be held at the Auburn Depot by the Peacock Gallery, located opposite the Auburn Botanic Gardens on Chisholm Road, Auburn, from Tuesday 19February 2019.
There are two sessions to choose from; a morning session from 9am-12pm or afternoon session from 1pm-4pm.
