The initiative, which brings together more than 90 high school students, provides a platform for young people to voice their ideas, passions and experiences.

Speaking on behalf of a NSW electorate, each participant delivers a one-minute speech on issues that matter most to them.

Miss Ghribian will focus on ‘women in government’, an area she feels passionately about.

“In the past there has been a common assumption that female politicians wishing to succeed had to adopt a male style of communication to avoid scrutiny,” Ms Ghribian said.

“However, within 15 minutes into her first press conference as the new NSW Premier, Gladys Berejiklian was asked whether she thought that not having children was a ‘disadvantage to her political career.’

“This is a case of double standards. A male Premier is unlikely to have ever been asked this.”

Mayor of Cumberland, Steve Christou today visited Miss Ghribian, ahead next week’s event. He said it was important that young people had a voice in NSW Parliament.

“Council has been asked to nominate a young person from Granville for Children’s Parliament and I’m confident that Mary will do Cumberland Local Government Area and Granville proud next week,” he said.

“Initiatives like these empower young people and make them feel heard. They also have a captive audience of some of the State’s most senior law-makers.”
