As Ramadan approaches, Cumberland City Council wishes our Islamic community a blessed month of fasting. Residents are also encouraged to avoid public gatherings and ensure they follow social distancing rules.

“The world is facing great disruption right now, so we understand that Ramadan will feel a little different this year," said Mayor Steve Christou.

“We know that this is a revered month in the Islamic calendar filled with faith and reflection, and usually family gatherings and community congregations in mosques.

“It is a challenging time, but just like we practised social distancing over the Easter long weekend, I want to stress the importance of social distancing for the safety of the community during Ramadan. Rules apply to gatherings indoors and outdoors and these rules are in place to limit the spread of the disease.

"Council would like to remind restaurants of the Government's dine-in restrictions that are still effective throughout Ramadan, we encourage residents to support local businesses by ordering takeaway or delivery during the breaking of the fast period.

“There are a range of ways to stay healthy and connected even while we have to remain distant; that can include Facetiming your extended family over dinner or hosting a virtual house party or even sending an old-fashioned letter or card.

“The Ramadan spirit has always been about giving and generosity, so I encourage you to demonstrate these values during this time, whether it’s supporting local business, or getting involved in initiatives aimed at helping and supporting others in need.

"We wish you a Ramadan Mubarak."
