After being named the most ‘Sustainable City’ in metropolitan NSW in 2019, Cumberland City will be hosting this year’s Keep Australia Beautiful NSW Sustainable Cities Awards at the newly built Granville Centre, on 12 November 2020.

The Awards recognise projects or actions in a number of areas of environmental sustainability and social inclusion.

Mayor Steve Christou believes councils can lead behavioural change by engaging the community to continuously improve the environment.

“I am honoured that Council is hosting the Awards this year and look forward to seeing what work has been happening to keep communities responsible,” said Mayor Steve Christou.

“As a young Council, we are working towards a clean and green Cumberland. From waste reduction to improved infrastructure and community focused programs - we are delivering a wide range of initiatives to ensure long-term sustainability of Cumberland’s natural environment.

“I encourage all residents to work with their local council to reduce the impact on our environment.”

Keep Australia Beautiful - NSW Sustainable Cities Awards Program is a community and environmental awards program for metropolitan communities in NSW, fostering partnerships between local authorities, businesses, community groups, schools and individuals.

Since 1994, projects that not only enhance the environment but also improve the standard of living and well-being of urban communities have been a hallmark of the activities recognised by these awards.

Val Southam, Keep Australia Beautiful NSW CEO, is very proud of the awards’ history.

“This is KAB NSW’s 27th annual metropolitan event and we are excited to celebrate the fantastic achievements and spirit of communities and Councils, particularly as this has been such a difficult year,” said Ms Southam.

“These awards instil optimism and highlight positive outcomes even during times of hardship.

“We are very pleased to have KAB NSW joint patrons, Her Excellency the Honourable Margaret Beazley AC QC, Governor of New South Wales, and Mr Dennis Wilson attending to present the Overall award in this brand-new function centre.”

Keep Australia Beautiful NSW runs a number of events throughout the year, which educate about best environmental practices as well as reward those in the community who make large strides towards keeping NSW beautiful.
